Women Easily Defeat No. 8 Syracuse

While most Hoyas were sunning themselves or skiing down the slopes, the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team was extending its win streak. On Sunday, the Hoyas traveled to Syracuse, earning a second straight Big East win and seventh consecutive win over the No. 8 Syracuse Orangewomen, 10-5.

Junior attack Sarah Oliphant led the Hoyas, tallying four goals and picking up four ground balls. She earned Big East Offensive Player of the Week accolades for her effort. Georgetown opened scoring less than two minutes into the game when junior midfielder Allison Chambers found the back of the net. Chambers then fed Oliphant near the net for the Hoyas’ second score. Syracuse scored once before Georgetown struck back five consecutive times, taking a 7-2 lead. The scoring alternated between the two teams over the remainder of the game, with Syracuse scoring three of the game’s last five goals. Georgetown, however still managed to come out with the win.

Junior goaltender Sarah Robinson made five saves while Syracuse sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Kasel made 13 saves on Georgetown’s 32 shots. The Hoyas outshot the Orangewomen 32-17, including a 22-6 margin in the first half.

On Sunday, March 7, the women crushed its first Big East opponent of the season, taking out Virginia Tech, 16-7. The game was the first for the Hokies in the new VT Lacrosse Stadium.

Junior attack Sarah Oliphant padded her resume with a strong performance, giving the Hoyas four goals and two assists. Senior midfielders Michi Ellers and Gloria Lozano also had strong games, Ellers picking up six ground balls and causing three Hokie turnovers, and Lozano contributing seven draw controls.

Georgetown opened the game with five consecutive goals in the first 13 minutes before Tech tallied two. The Hoyas finished the half leading 8-2. In the second half, the Hokies tallied a goal which was immediately answered with three Georgetown goals from freshman attack Coco Stanwick, Oliphant and Ellers.

The Hokies put up a three-goal run of their own, which was followed by another three-goal Georgetown run. The game ended with Georgetown leading 16-7.
