After a lightning delay of more than an hour during Georgetown’s season opener at Davidson, senior quarterback Isaiah Kempf sustained a concussion on his team’s first drive. But the Hoyas (1-0) overcame both challenges to notch a 35-14 win.

With Kempf sidelined just a few plays into the game — he is now week-to-week, according to a Georgetown spokesman — junior backup quarterback Aaron Aiken was thrust into the lead role. Aiken stumbled at first, throwing an interception that left the Hoyas in a 7-0 hole.

While his first drive may not have inspired confidence, Aiken came into his own on the following play, where he rushed for 32 yards and then found sophomore wide receiver Kevin Macari on a 48-yard touchdown pass.

Junior running back Nick Campanella broke open the resulting tie in the second quarter when he completed a 53-yard touchdown run, aided by the Blue and Gray’s powerful offensive line to notch a 14-7 lead.

“On offense, we ran the ball better than we have in a long time. Aaron Aiken came in and did an awesome job for us and the offensive line played very well,” Head Coach Kevin Kelly said in a statement.

Georgetown’s defense — much-vaunted going into the season — was also essential for the win. Senior linebacker Robert McCabe, the Patriot League preseason defensive player of the year, had 17 tackles on the night.

“Our defense was as physical as we’ve ever been,” Kelly said. “[Junior defensive back] Dustin Wharton had double digit quarterback hurries and two sacks and Rob McCabe was his usual self, with 17 tackles and three tackles for loss.”

In the second half, Campanella and the Blue and Gray picked up right where they left off, with Aiken connected on two long passes, allowing Campanella to score from two yards out, putting Georgetown up 21-7.

After freshman linebacker Ty Parsons blocked Davidson’s punt, the Hoyas took the ball on the Wildcats 32 yard line and Aiken connected on a short pass to Campanella to stretch the lead to 28-7.

In the fourth quarter, Davidson got its act together for a 15-yard touchdown pass but Georgetown still had their measure, with Campanella scoring on a 45-yard touchdown.

Junior kicker Matt MacZura connected on all five of his extra point attempts and the Hoyas prevailed, 35-14.
