Dog Tag Bakery

As we settle down at home for the holidays, some of you may be looking for a Hoya-themed holiday feel-good story. How about a bakery-slash-academic class, operated by military veterans and co-founded by a Jesuit from Georgetown? Earlier this month, on Dec. 6, the Dog Tag Bakery had its grand opening at 3206 Grace St. NW.

This nonprofit runs as a six-month-long training program hiring returning veterans in a fellowship. The fellowship consists of coursework at Georgetown’s School of Continuing Studies – earning a certificate in business administration – while running the bakery storefront. Co-founded by Connie Milstein and Georgetown’s own Father Rick Curry, S.J., the first class of Dog Tag Bakery fellows consisted of seven veterans, a small percentage of the whopping 117 applicants.

A special feature of the fellowship, for those who may not be familiar with Father Curry’s interest in theater, is a special communications class, which involves public speaking training in a performance setting.

So when you’re back on campus and get a craving for banana bread or other baked treats (vegan and gluten-free items included!), head to Grace St. Because if Dog Tag Bakery isn’t a shining example of Georgetown’s Jesuit ideals, what is?

Check out the more information about Dog Tag Bakery, including the menu, here.

Thanks to D.C. Eater and the Washington Post for the info!
