3.3 Million U.S. Students at Risk for Mass Identity Theft

The personal information of 3.3 million borrowers was stolen from a federal student loan guarantor, the organization announced in a statement on Friday.

The Educational Credit Management Corporation said that the stolen data included names, addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers of the borrowers. No bank or financial account information was stolen.

It is unclear at this point how many Georgetown students borrow from ECMC, and the university is working with the organization to identify any Georgetown borrowers who may be affected, Andy Pino, director of media relations, said in an e-mail.

ECMC will notify affected clients in writing this week, the statement said. The company has partnered with Experian, a national credit protection agency, to offer affected customers free credit protection and monitoring services.

The theft was discovered on March 21 and ECMC waited for approval from law enforcement agencies to announce the theft to borrowers. The data was stored on a portable media device, according to the statement.

“ECMC is cooperating fully with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies conducting the investigation,” the statement said.

ECMC is the designated guaranty agency in Virginia, Oregon and Connecticut. ECMC contracts with the federal government to protect student loans from default, but it does not originate such loans, according the company’s Web site.”
