Federal immigration services transferred Badar Khan Suri, the Georgetown University postdoctoral researcher detained March 17, to a detention facility in Alvarado, Texas, March 22, according to a locator for immigration detainees.
Immigration officials had previously held Khan Suri at a staging facility in Alexandria, La., after arresting him outside his Rosslyn, Va., home. An initial petition from his lawyer filed in federal court March 18 said he was at “imminent risk” of being moved to a facility in Los Fresnos, Texas, where he is expected to have a hearing May 6, according to a March 20 filing.
The transfer comes after U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles ordered March 20 that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security cannot deport Khan Suri as the case continues.
Earlier that day, Khan Suri’s lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a legal nonprofit that defends constitutional rights, filed a motion to return Suri to Virginia. Khan Suri’s wife also submitted a motion asking for his immediate release March 20, noting he is the only source of income for their family, including their three children.
Khan Suri’s lawyer and the federal immigration agencies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
