A Lucky Win For One Basketball Fan

Some know him as the man who writes game recaps and posts box scores on GUHoyas.com. Others know him as the man in the sweater vest sitting courtside at basketball games. But for $210, one lucky fan will get to find out exactly what Sports Information Director ichael “Mex” Carey does on gameday.

Spending a day at Verizon Center with Carey was one of seven athletics-related prizes auctioned off on the athletic department’s Web site over the past two weeks. Other items included a sailing lesson with sailing Head Coach Mike Callahan, two game-worn jerseys – one men’s soccer, one women’s volleyball – and a chance to dine at the Tombs with several of Georgetown’s football coaches. But with 13 bids, the opportunity to shadow Carey generated the most interest and raised the most money.

For someone who is truly passionate about Georgetown basketball, Carey said, this is a unique opportunity.

“The experience I get on a game to game basis is fantastic,” he said. “I love what I do.”

Bidding ended yesterday, but the winner was not announced by last night.

This is the first time the athletic department has held such an auction, which was intended to raise money for the university’s sports teams.

According to Andy Rowdon, the athletic department’s assistant director of marketing, the university had seen other schools hold similar auctions, but that they tried to offer items that were “uniquely Georgetown.”

“We thought this was a great opportunity for us to support our athletic teams,” he added.

Proceeds from the auctions, Rowdon said, will be used to support the corresponding teams.

Though the Web site says that the winner gets to “live the life of the Georgetown sports information director,” Carey said the high-bidder would not have to help transcribe quotes or bring his daughter to swim lessons as they spend the day in his size-eight shoes.
