The 66th NFL Draft passed this weekend and senior standout Gharun Hester remained unselected. However, this is far from the end of the wide receivers’ NFL hopes.
Hester is now eligible as a free agent and can still sign with an NFL team.
“Statistically speaking, it’s very difficult to get drafted,” Georgetown football Head Coach Bob Benson said. “The leading receiver in the Big East didn’t get drafted. It’s hard.”
Hester’s former coach Bob Benson believes Hester’s current status as a free agent is better overall than being selected in the late rounds of the draft.
“You have more options [as a free agent],” Benson said. “If you get drafted in the last round, you’re committed to that team. He has many more options now to try to find out what the best situation is for him.”
In addition to football, Hester played on Georgetown’s men’s basketball team. While playing two sports could have been detrimental to his selection in the draft, Benson believes the overall experience of playing collegiate basketball in a nationally recognized conference helped Hester by giving him media exposure.
“I think [basketball] helped him as much as anything,” Benson said. “I think the exposure of playing Big East basketball helped him be noticed . the basketball experience is a definite plus.”
While Benson did express some mild disappointment for his former player going undrafted, Benson was confident Hester would find a team in the near future.
“Believe me, he has teams that want to sign him,” Benson said.
Benson declined to comment on which teams were pursuing Hester.
Presently all teams are working through Hester’s agent, ike Sullivan. Sullivan also handles Virginia Tech phenom and top overall draft pick Michael Vick.
