Over the past two years in Washington, D.C., I’ve perfected the art of procrastination. My favorite way? Running away from my responsibilities (literally). Another favorite procrastination method of mine is writing blog posts that will probably tarnish my digital footprint forever! So, being the genius that I am, I decided to combine my two favorite procrastination techniques into one masterpiece: an unofficial, highly opinionated list of the best places to run in D.C.
If you’re wanting to increase your stamina, get your heart rate up or get (runner’s) high for free, then this article is for you! Without further ado, I present to you a curated list of my top five favorite running routes in D.C. (complete with mapped out Strava routes linked)!
- Distance: Your choice! The trail begins at the Canal Visitors Center in Georgetown and stretches 184.5 miles into Maryland.
- Perfect for: Reconnecting with nature.
- Best time to run: Sunrise or sunset for breathtaking views that make it feel like you’ve escaped the confines of your Lau 1 cubicle, even if just for a moment.
2. Monuments
- Distance: Around 4 miles (5.5 if you do a lap around the Reflecting Pool).
- Perfect for: When you want to take a trip to the mall without spending a dime.
- Best time to run: Go during cherry blossom season for some monument-al photos that will leave your hometown opps jealous they don’t go here.
3. White House
- Distance: Around 6 miles.
- Perfect for: When you decide to take “running for office” literally.
- Best time to run: During rush hour, if you’re like me and enjoy the short breaks provided by the traffic lights.
- Distance: Around 8.5 miles.
- Perfect for: When you’re craving a little panda-monium in your life.
- Best time to run: December, during “ZooLights,” when the entire zoo is lit up beautifully. Don’t forget to queue up your favorite holiday playlist for an extra festive vibe
5. Capitol Loop
- Distance: Around 9.5 miles.
- Perfect for: When you’re looking for an un–bill-lievable view of a national landmark.
- Best time to run: A popular route any day, but especially scenic and enjoyable during quieter weekday mornings or early evenings.
