Marking his 16th visit since the beginning of his presidency, Former President Bill Clinton (SFS ’68) will speak at Georgetown Wednesday, Nov. 7 in a speech sponsored by the Lecture Fund and the School of Foreign Service.
The speech is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Gaston Hall and at least 400 student tickets will be available, organizers said.
Students will be able to sign up to receive tickets Sunday, Nov. 4, and Monday, Nov. 5, at the Leavey Center Information Booth.
A new ticket policy will be implemented for the speech for security reasons and also to ensure the Georgetown students are the ones actually attending the event.
According to Andrew Koneschusky (MSB ’03), lecture fund vice chair for external affairs, each student will be allotted only one ticket, and a Georgetown ID card must be shown to receive the ticket.
Physical tickets will not be handed out during the distribution times, instead organizers will be taking names of students interested in attending the speech.
On the day of the event, students will be instructed to pick up their ticket on the first floor of the Healy building.
“We want to make sure students are the ones actually receiving the tickets,” Koneschusky said.
Organizers said the subject of Clinton’s speech is yet to be determined, but will be announced in the near future.
Last month, Clinton and Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole announced a scholarship fund campaign at Georgetown University for the children and spouses of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Founded by the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America and the Lumina Foundation for Education, Clinton and Dole were asked to spearhead the effort in hopes of lending credibility to the fund and gathering momentum for donations.
“There’s no greater long-term need than the children of the tragedy,” Clinton said from the President’s Room of Healy Hall. “I have stood in line at the crisis center and talked to victims’ families. And some of the people who will benefit from this have not even been born yet . the gift will be giving for quite a long while.”
Following the announcement, Clinton and Dole taped public service announcements in Riggs Library to air on television and radio.
Last September, Clinton announced a major policy decision to not authorize the immediate deployment of a national missile defense system at Georgetown.
Clinton said he had a particular reason for making the policy speech at Georgetown. “I was thinking when we came out here and [SFS Dean Robert] Bob [L. Galluci] talked about the beginning of the school year that it was 35 years ago when, as a sophomore, I was in charge of freshman orientation,” he said. “So I thought I would come and help this year’s orientation of freshman get off to a good start.”
