Save for Sept. 11, 2001, today is likely the most historic day of our lives. We will either elect America’s first black president or we will witness one of the most remarkable political comebacks in the nation’s history. Today’s significance requires no embellishment.
In case you haven’t heard this enough: Vote. The country’s future is at stake, and there is no excuse for failing to exercise your right as a citizen. Whatever it takes, go to the polls.
Additionally, make the most of the incredible opportunity tonight offers. Set aside homework, club meetings, job applications, whatever else you have going on and tune in to the returns. Soak it all in. Watch and read anything you can. There is much to be learned from the final night of this historic election, whether you strive to be a scholar of American history or simply a civically engaged citizen. This is one of the elections, like Truman beating Dewey, Kennedy beating Nixon, Bush beating Gore, which we will remember for decades to come.
