Eight GUSA Candidates Selected in Primaries

Roughly 50 percent of the freshman class voted in the GUSA primary elections Wednesday, narrowing the pool of candidates for GUSA representative from 19 to eight.

Final elections, in which the candidate pool will be narrowed from eight to four, will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

GUSA Election Commissioner Kerri Tyman (COL ’00) said that the turnout for the primary election was good, despite a rainy election day.

One of the candidates, Jamaal Young (SFS), who received 192 votes, said his campaign was built “on love and ghetto-ness,” referring to the fact his fliers were handwritten and copied on quarter sheets of paper. One of his goals is to secure money for the Residence Hall Offices to buy computers, so they can have databases and be able to alphabetize daily package lists.

Another candidate that will move on to the final elections is Paul Sciarotta (SFS), who received 214 votes.

Sciarotta said, “I have had a great time during the campaign.” He said he has “no concrete plans and he’s not going to make huge promises.” However, he said he would like for InterHall to develop a better relationship with GUSA since InterHall is in charge of allocating funding to dorms, and GUSA has no decision in the matter.

Nicole Yue (COL), who received 226 votes, said she is extremely motivated to work hard. Yue is running on the same ticket as Sciarotta, which means that they are working together on their campaigns, though votes are counted separately. She said she would like to improve student activities funding and dorm life.

Other candidates who were selected to move on to the final election were Trey Street (SFS), who received 330 votes; Sean Hawks (SFS), who received 318 votes; Missy Foy (COL), with 264 votes; Whet Smith (COL), with 201 votes, and Eric Lincoln (SFS), with 178 votes.
