Freshmen Provide Hoyas Big Boost

With some big wins this past weekend, the Georgetown freshmen showed why the Blue and Gray will be a force in Big East tennis this season.

The Hoyas looked to follow their big weekend at the Georgetown Classic, highlighted by senior Dave Tillem’s run to the finals, with a strong showing at the Bruno Tennis Classic at Brown University. Freshman Charlie Caris was the star this weekend finishing a perfect 6-0 in his doubles and singles matches.

The rest of the men’s team also enjoyed success, most notably winning all three doubles matches they played against Boston College. Although winning the majority of the doubles matches only earns only one point for the victorious team, it provides significant momentum, and puts the team well on the road to the four points required to win. In fact, in the three head-to-head matchups Georgetown won last year, they snagged the doubles point in every one.

The women’s team continued to impress as well, with a Hoya reaching a final for the third consecutive week. Although freshman Nora Montgomery had been stealing the show the past two weekends, it was fellow freshman Ally Landers’ turn to shine this weekend, and she captured the Flight D title at the Old Dominion Collegiate Invitational.

Although she did not win her flight, freshman Victoria Sekely also gave a boost to the Blue and Gray, making a run at the semi-finals of her flight, where she was defeated in a tightly contested match by one of Virginia Commonwealth’s best players.

The men’s team returns to action next weekend at the Navy Gold Invitational where they will face The George Washington University, the Naval Academy and the University of Maryland. The women play next on Oct. 22, when they will participate in the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech.”
