Georgetown Cupcake Plans Nov. Move to M Street

As a flourishing business that is quickly discovering the limits of its premises, [Georgetown Cupcake](https://georgetowncupcake.com/) has decided to move. This November, the shop will be moving from [1209 Potomac St. NW](https://www.thehoya.com/news/local-business-success-just-icing-on-the-cupcake/) to a [larger and more central location at the corner of 33rd and M Streets](https://www.thehoya.com/news/fire-hydrant-bursts-forces-evacuation/).

Opened in February 2008 by two sisters, Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne, this business has outgrown its limited quarters. Currently tucked into a small building on Potomac Street, it is not usual to see a line of customers out the door and down the block, patiently waiting their turn for cupcakes in flavors like key lime, lemon blossom and red velvet.

“After a year and a half in business, we had grown to a point where we knew that we needed to have a larger location,” LaMontagne said.

The new location is good news for Georgetown students looking for jobs.

“We anticipate moving all of our current employees to our new location and may hire more later in November,” LaMontage said. “Over half of our employees are Georgetown University students.”

Georgetown Cupcake is not only beloved amongst Georgetown students; it has also grabbed national attention. D.C.’s first cupcake store has been featured on [the Rachel Ray Show](https://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/view/676/), [the Martha Stewart Show](https://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/chocolate-and-vanilla-election-day-cupcakes), the Today Show and in People magazine and [The New York Times](https://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/23/sweet-sweet-washington/?scp=1&sq=%22georgetown%20cupcake%22&st=cse).

Furthermore, the bakery sells more than just cupcakes. Serious Georgetown Cupcake fans can purchase hand-painted sterling silver charms decorated to look like the 12 most popular cupcake flavors. Other items include baby onesies, T-shirts, tanks, dog t-shirts, travel mugs and gift cards.

While Georgetown Cupcake certainly has a special place in the hearts of students, LaMontagne says the entire neighborhood will benefit from the move.

“We really hope to make the corner of 33rd and M Streets a really special corner in Georgetown with a strong community feel,” she said. “Our new shop will cater to everyone.”

LaMontagne also added that the move will shorten the walk for Georgetown students.

“We’re actually going to be a block closer to campus,” she said.

Other changes in the new location will include a new menu of cupcake flavors on Mondays and extended hours. The larger location will also provide for a more relaxed atmosphere.

“We also wanted a larger space for our customers to be able to sit down and enjoy their cupcakes. So, our new location will have more tables and seating,” LaMontagne said.

In the end, however, the new Georgetown Cupcake location will retain its original character, the owners say.

“We are keeping everything about the look and feel of our Potomac Street shop the same at M Street. Everything else will be the same except that there will be more room for our customers to sit down and relax.”
