Seniors Tommy Lee, Kelly Muir, Rob Begin, Jimmy Saris, Sean Baumann and Greg Pustizzi could not have asked for a better way to end their last home series wearing the Blue and Gray.
Taking two of three games from Big East rival Villanova this past weekend, the seniors were able to cap their Hoya careers with impressive wins on both Saturday and Sunday.
“The past weekend was a great way to honor the seniors,” Lee, the team’s center fielder, said after the series. “We performed in front of a great crowd of students and family. It was a great end taking it from rival Villanova as well as taking the last home series.”
Georgetown won 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Wildcats on Saturday and won the rubber match of the series 4-1 on Sunday. The Hoyas lost the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 16-2.
Game one was tough for Georgetown, as senior designated hitter Joe Rosati went 5-for-5 against the Hoyas including a homer and a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored.
In game two, Georgetown jumped out to a big lead early, thanks to a five-run first inning. Junior second baseman Chip Malt walked and sophomore DH Erick Fernandez knocked him in with a double. Three consecutive singles by sophomore third baseman Sean Lamont, the left fielder Baumann and junior shortstop Tom Elliott knocked in Fernandez and loaded the bases for redshirt sophomore first baseman Dan Capeless, who scored Lamont on an RBI ground out. Then Pustizzi, the Hoyas’ catcher, stepped to the plate and cracked another single, the fifth hit of the inning, for two more runs and a 5-0 lead. The Hoyas would add a run in both the second and third innings on RBI hits by Fernandez and Muir, the right fielder.
Junior starting pitcher Tim Adleman was barely able to preserve the Hoyas’ 7-0 lead, giving up six runs over seven innings, striking out seven Villanova batters while walking only two. Adleman danced out of trouble in the sixth with the Hoyas holding a 7-2 lead when the Wildcats loaded the bases with just one out and a chance to get back in the game. But Adleman induced two consecutive ground outs to allow just one run and escape still holding a four-run cushion. Redshirt freshman Jared Cohen pitched two innings in relief, recording six straight outs for his first save of the season.
In the final game of the series, freshman starter Will Harris followed Adleman’s lead for his third win of the season, pitching seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out six. Sophomore Pablo Vinent then came in from the bullpen for two scoreless innings to record his first save of the season.
The Georgetown offense came alive in the fifth after Muir knocked in Elliott on a fielder’s choice. The next inning, Baumann crushed a two-run double to make the score 3-1. The Hoyas scored for the third consecutive inning after Lamont was walked with the bases loaded to seal the deal for Georgetown, giving Harris and Vincent a 4-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
On Tuesday night, the Hoyas defeated UMBC 10-3 in their home finale for their third consecutive win, their longest win streak of the season.
Five Hoya pitchers combined to allow just three runs, including a five-inning, four-strikeout effort by junior Billy Concannon for his first win of the season. Malt went 3-for-5, scoring two runs, and Lamont was unstoppable, also going 3-for-5 with two doubles, his 14th homerun of the season and four RBIs. Elliott stole two bases while knocking in a run and freshman catcher Andy Lentz also knocked in a pair.
Georgetown is in Piscataway, N.J., this weekend for a three-game series with Rutgers University, their final series of the year. The Hoyas lost the first game 7-2 yesterday after Rutgers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Georgetown gets back on the diamond this afternoon at 3 p.m.
