Georgetown Women Leap and Sprint into Weekend Spotlight

For the past few weeks, Hoya track and field has seen impressive performances from the leaders of the men’s team.

This weekend, however, the tables turned. It was the weekend of the women.

At the Eric Kloiber Metro Invitational in Emmitsburg, Md., sophomore jumper Ashley Mondie stole the day with two first-place finishes, in both the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 40’5″, and the long jump with a mark of 18’6.5″.

The women proceeded to accumulate second-place finishes from sophomore Jayne Penn in the 400-meter dash (57.97), senior Leilani Green in the pole vault (3.40 meters) and the women’s 4 x 100-meter relay team of sophomores Nichole Torpey, Kandace Ferguson and Mondie and freshman Ashley Hubbard (46.47). The relay team edged out Mount St. Mary’s by 0.04 seconds.

In the 200-meter dash the Hoyas took third through sixth places as Ferguson, Torpey, Hubbard and Mondie finished in that order, all within a second of each other.

Freshman Alex Baptiste took third in the 400-meter dash, finishing just behind Penn with a time of 57.97. Later in the day she took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.73 meters.

Besides Mondie’s performance in the long jump, Torpey took fifth with 5.32 meters, followed immediately by Baptiste in sixth place with 5.36 meters. Hubbard, who also jumped in the event, took eighth with 5.09 meters.

The men split between two events. Senior Teddy Presley was the top finisher at the Metro Invitational, taking third in the triple jump with a length of 42’11” and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 20’10”. Junior Jesse Patterson also took fourth in the long jump, posting a mark of 23’0″.

Freshman Winston Weatherspoon ran the 800 meters in 1:58.32 for fourth place, just short of his personal record of 1:55, while sophomore Jonathan Geffrard, who transferred from Wheaton College this year, ran the 100-meter dash in 11.39.

The rest of the men who competed this weekend headed to Princeton, N.J., where they participated in the Princeton Invitational. Senior Chris Esselborn led the Hoyas, finishing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:15.07. Sophomore Brian Dalpiaz was less than a second behind him, finishing fifth, while freshman Shane Young finished eighth with a time of 9:20.93.

In the tight 800-meter run, senior Nat Glackin took fourth with a time of 1:53.00, two seconds short of his personal record for the event. The top 11 finishers in the race all crossed the line within two seconds of each other. Freshman Mike Billington took 15th in the event.

Sophomore Rasheed Thompson took fifth in the men’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:51.73 and was followed immediately by sophomore Neil Grosscup less than 0.02 seconds later. Freshman ike Banks took 14th.

The Hoyas will next race Thursday at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
