Green-Butts

Dan Gelfand/The Hoya GUSA candidate Josh Green (SFS ’06) talks on a cellphone while campaign staffers put up a banner behind him.

With a comprehensive platform, Josh Green (SFS ’06) and Lauren Butts (SFS ’06) portray themselves as GUSA outsiders with a deep interest in the future of Georgetown.

They said they see their sophomore standing as an asset.

“With two more years here on the Hilltop, we can be more focused on making our implementations last, as we have to live with our decisions,” Green said.

The pair has developed a platform of 14 objectives. Highlights include small and frequent faculty-student dinners, expanded weekend GUTS bus service, a system of videotaping large lectures and making them available online for students who miss a class with appropriate reasons, more school events such as formal dances in cDonough Gymnasium, an online student and faculty facebook available only to members of the Georgetown community, expanded service at the Darnall Dining Hall and the development of a student barbershop in the Leavey Center.

Green understands the actual roles of the GUSA president and vice president as intermediaries between the students, GUSA Assembly and university administration. “Resolutions by the Assembly are secondary to the will of the administration. Where executives could make a difference, though, is in the influencing of these viewpoints,” he said. “In all actuality, the president and vice president are sales people who need to present feasible and well-supported business plans to the administrators.”

Having worked in the President’s Office and on the Lecture Fund, Green said he plans to use the connections developed during those experiences to help execute their platform.

Butts said she believes their status as GUSA outsiders makes them an attractive ticket.

“Since we are not currently part of GUSA,” she said, “we have the unique perspective to be in tune with the student body without the GUSA mentality.”
