The Georgetown women’s field hockey team lost to 10th-ranked Virginia, 3-1, Friday before shutting out Rider, 6-0, on Sunday. The Hoyas’ record now stands at 10-3.
The Hoyas wasted no time getting on the board against Rider, as freshman back Elena Elster scored just two minutes and 36 seconds into the game. The goal came off a penalty corner, assisted by junior forward Aubrey Bruggeman and freshman forward Leeanne Rizzo. The Hoyas’ second goal was scored by Rizzo on a pass from Bruggeman, Rizzo’s fourth goal of the season. The score remained 2-0 at halftime.
The Hoyas continued to overpower the Broncs in the second half, as Elster found the net in the 38th minute on a penalty stroke. A little more than a minute later, Elster assisted freshman forward Shelly Samperton on Samperton’s first career goal.
Elster continued to dominate the Broncs’ defense, scoring her third goal of the day, unassisted, at 43:46, marking her second hat trick of the season. Elster now leads the team with 39 points on 17 goals and five assists.
The game ended with a goal by sophomore forward Michaela Brown on a pass from Bruggeman. Bruggeman now leads the team in assists with 12.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Herring had seven saves in her fifth shutout of the season.
Following Georgetown’s 3-1 loss to10th-rankedVirginia on Friday, Head Coach Laurie Caroll said the team played “our best hockey game yet.”
The Cavaliers got off to a quick start, as they scored on a penalty corner just 2:34 into the game. The goal was the only one the Hoyas allowed in the first half.
Carroll said that the team was pleased with its play after one half of hockey. During halftime, the Hoyas didn’t make any changes to their game plan. They discussed simply continuing to play their best and having “no regrets,” Carroll said.
The Hoyas took those words to heart, as Elster scored five minutes into the second half, assisted by Bruggeman following a penalty corner.
However, the Hoya defense was unable to stop the Cavaliers from scoring two more goals, one at 44:57 and one at 55:19.
“We played a great game. They’re a tournament team in the most competitive conference in the nation, so I was very happy,” Carroll said despite the loss.
Jessica Herring had 12 saves in the contest. The three goals were the most the Hoyas (9-3) have allowed all season, as Georgetown is ranked third nationally in scoring defense at .91 goals-against average.
Muting the solid play for the Hoyas is the unfortunate news for the Hoyas is that senior midfielder and captain Sarah Oglesby is out for the season with a hand injury. Rizzo has filled Oglesby’s spot in the important penalty corner unit.
Georgetown will face Richmond University tomorrow on Kehoe Field at 3 p.m.
