In their final tournament of the season, the Georgetown men’s golf team finished 12th of 14 teams in the First Energy Intercollegiate tournament held at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday.
Georgetown shot a 63-over-par 927 while Ball State University ran away at the tournament with a 10-under-par 854. Eastern Kentucky finished in second place, 13 strokes behind at a 3-over-par 867. Kent State, 8-over par, Austin Peay, 18-over par and Eastern Michigan, 18-over par rounded out the top five.
Junior Matt Busa led the Hoyas by shooting a 3-over-par 219 for the three rounds and tying for 10th place individually. He shot an impressive two-under par in the first round before slipping in the next two, shooting four-over and one-over par in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Senior Patrick Wilkes-Krier of Ball State took home first place honors with his 15-under par, 201-stroke performance. Wilkes-Krier went wire-to-wire in his win, shooting rounds of 69, 67 and 65 strokes to finish at 15-under par and seven strokes ahead of second place finisher Korey Mahoney of Eastern Michigan.
Georgetown finished with a 3.32 scoring average on par-three holes, good for fourth in the tournament but could not capitalize where other teams feasted.
Ball State and eight other teams finished below par on par-five holes while Georgetown finished in a tie for last place on those holes with a 5.27 scoring average.
Its inability to capitalize on the longer holes separated Georgetown from the rest of the pack.
On par-four holes, the Hoyas finished 56-over par and 11th in the field of 14.
The Hoyas played their best collective golf on the four par-three holes but slipped on the other 14.
The final results of the match were no different than others that the Hoyas have turned in this season. They have consistently finished in the bottom third of teams and have hardly compared to other Georgetown teams of the last few years.
In 1999, the men captured the Big East championship while as few as two years ago, the team made it as far as the NCAA Eastern Regional Tournament.
This match was the last of the season for the men’s team after a five match spring season.
