GU Led Area Schools in MPD March Arrests

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested 25 Georgetown students for underage drinking violations at local bars during the month of March, the most of any area university, according to MPD Second District Captain Michael L. Jacobs.

In total, MPD officers made 114 arrests last month for either underage possession of alcohol or intentional misrepresentation of age to procure alcohol.

The five establishments at which the most arrests occurred were 5 Club, Foggy Bottom Club, Chadwicks, Rhino Bar and Pumphouse and Champions. Seventy-eight students were arrested at the five combined. Of these establishments, MPD officers visited Rhino the most, nine times in total while Chadwicks was visited five times.

The spree of arrests comes as a result of an MPD drinking initiative earlier this year targeting Georgetown area bars. The program, known as SUDs, or Stopping Underage Drinking, was launched in January by MPD officials to crack down on use of false identification at bars and liquor stores.

Sixteen individuals were arrested at Chadwicks and Rhino, the most of any Georgetown bars. Most of the arrests at Chadwicks occurred on March 16, when officers arrested 14 people.

A total of 22 arrests were made at Chadwicks, Rhino and Champions on March 16 alone.

Thirteen individuals were arrested at Champions during seven visits.

Of the 17 bars targeted by MPD, only two were found to have no violations during visits, Garrett’s and Atomic Billiards.

In total, 25 Georgetown students were arrested, five more than at George Washington University, the next closest total. Nineteen American University students were arrested, while seven Marymount University students were arrested. Five Catholic University students were apprehended, as well as three University of Maryland students. Students from Trinity College, George Mason University, Loyola College, Virginia Tech, Northern Virginia Community College, the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University were also arrested in the MPD sting.

According to Jacobs, most of the arrests occurred after midnight by officers on regular duty.

Britt Swan, the general manager of Rhino, said that MPD efforts help cut down on false identification use more than efforts made by individual bars.

“The problem is that these IDs that are presented are very lifelike,” Swan said. “When the police approach someone, they are more intimidating and as a result they confess more quickly.”

“When they question you, it’s a little bit more intense,” Swan said.

Swan said that he thinks bars are generally receptive to efforts to cut underage drinking. “I think all of the bars are doing a good job,” he said, noting that managers including himself often attending Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings and MPD workshops on stopping alcohol violations.

Representatives of Champions, 5 Club, The Tombs and Chadwicks were unavailable for comment.

Vice President for Student Affairs Juan C. Gonzalez released the statistics yesterday, saying that it “clearly reflects [MPD’s] focus on this issue and demonstrates their intention to reduce underage drinking.”

“We, as a university, are very concerned that our students be familiar with the District of Columbia law and aware of the efforts of the MPD,” he said. “As always, my interest is to ensure that our students are safe and are making informed and intelligent decisions.”

“We were [in jail] for about seven hours,” said one freshman arrested at Chadwicks. He did not wish to be identified.
