Georgetown University recently named Scott S. Fleming (SFS ’72) assistant to the president for federal relations. Fleming is currently working as the assistant secretary for legislation and congressional affairs at the U.S. Department of Education.

“It’s great to be returning to the university,” Fleming said in a press release. “Further developing Georgetown’s federal relations program and representing the university within the government community offer opportunities both for the university and for my own professional growth. I have been impressed with the university leaders with whom I have met this far and I look forward to continuing to work with the entire university community to strengthen beneficial relations with the federal government.”

As the head of the Office of Federal Relations, Fleming will primarily be responsible for representing the university’s interests within the federal community, as well as being the main advisor and strategist to University President Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J, and other senior leadership.

“We are extremely pleased that Mr. Fleming has chosen to lead our federal relation efforts at Georgetown,” O’Donovan said in a press release. “He combines a strong commitment to education with his remarkable understanding of the government. His appointment is a major step forward for Georgetown.”

Originally from Kansas City, Mo., Flemming earned his master’s degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs after graduating from Georgetown.

In addition, Fleming worked for various members of Congress, including Rep. Nita M. Lowrey (D-N.Y.), Rep. Dan Glickman (D-Kan.) and the late Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.), before accepting the positions of acting assistant secretary, deputy assistant secretary, and director of congresssional affairs for the Education Department.
