GU Qualifies For MAISA Champs

This past weekend, the Georgetown sailing team competed in three regattas and qualified for the MAISA Sloop Championships, finishing fourth at the Sloop Qualifiers South at the Naval Academy.

The Hoya team of senior skippers Ryan Costello and Peter King and juniors Brian Bissell and Pat Donegan finished fourth at the Sloop Qualifiers South. By finishing in the top five, Georgetown qualified for the MAISA Championships and has a chance to compete in the Sloop Nationals in November.

Members of the Hoya sailing team traveled to St. Mary’s College, Md., to compete at the St. Mary’s Open. Georgetown placed second overall, highlighted by an impressive first-place finish in the B-division by freshman Thatcher Spring and junior Cecile Divoy. Sophomore Byron La Motte and junior Melanie Wood finished fifth in the A-division to help lead the Hoyas to their runner-up finish.

Georgetown sailors also traveled to the Naval Academy to compete in singlehanded racing at the Laser Qualifiers South. Senior Raoul angana placed second overall, closely followed by freshman Tyler Haskell. As a result of their solid performances, the two qualified for the MAISA Singlehanded Championship. Freshmen Bill Jorch and Derek Webster finished sixth and 16th respectively at the regatta.

Next weekend, the Hoyas will host the Tom Curtis Regatta in D.C., compete at the Danmark Trophy Regatta in New London, Conn., and the Freshman Groundbeaker in New York, NY.
