GU Runners Take Off at Penn Relays

Careers are made at the Penn Relays.

Every year, the glitterati of track and field descend upon Philadelphia to race against the world’s best.

Relay participants have won gold medals in every summer Olympics except the 1980 Moscow games. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, 24 alumni won gold medals, either individually or as part of a team. Over 240 collegiate teams participated this year, and the three-day long event saw a record 112,701 spectators.

The Hoyas did not leave disappointed.

The 4 x 400-meter team of sophomores Nichole Torpey, Kandance Ferguson and Ashley Mondie and freshman Alex Baptiste took third with a time of 3:42.41, barely edging out Penn.

The women also took fourth in the 4 x 800-meter championship run. Senior Kelley Otstott led the team off with a 2:11.1 leg, followed by sophomore Nana Hanson-Hall (2:08.7). Junior Meghan O’Neill anchored the team with a 2:08.04 leg while freshman aggie Infeld finished with a 2:08.5 leg.

In the distance medley, the women’s team finished sixth with a total time of 11:25.01. Sophomore Elizabeth Maloy ran the 1,200-meter leg (3:29.4), followed by Ferguson in the 400-meter leg (54.4), O’Neill in the 800-meter leg (2:11.8) and Infeld in the 1,600-meter leg (4:48.4). Duke won the event with a time of 11:10.18.

The men took fourth in the distance medley championship with a time of 9:34.93, edging out Villanova by 0.05 seconds after leading the race early on. Senior Tommy Manning ran the 1,200-meter leg in 2:57.5, followed by junior Chris Bonner in the 400-meter leg with a time of 49.1. Junior Stanley Lagrenade anchored the relay, running the 800-meter leg in 1:51.2, and junior Chris Lukezic finished with the 1,600-meter leg in 3:57.1.

The Hoya men’s 4 x mile team of sophomore Neil Grosscup (4:08.8), senior Rod Koborsi (4:03.5), senior Chris Esselborn (4:09.3) and sophomore Rasheed Thompson (4:14.8) finished seventh.

The only individual runner to place was senior Charlie Millioen, who finished 17th in the 5,000-meter championship run with a time of 14:22.34.

The Hoyas’ next race is this weekend during the Big East championships at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
