Former Hoya Walid Hajj ( COL ’04) was named the Cascade Major League Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on July 12.
Hajj, a member of the New Jersey Pride, earned the honor for his play against the Long Island Lizards. In a losing effort, Hajj tallied his first career hat trick and added an assist for a career-high four points.
“Walid played an unbelievably solid game,” Pride Head Coach Ted Georgalas said on the team’s Web site. “We love the things that he brings to our midfield. There’s speed, a great shot, and some solid defense when he does get caught back there.”
Hajj started in nine games for New Jersey in his rookie season. He scored 17 goals and had 10 assists on the year with only one penalty. The Pride finished the season at 1-12, winning only their first game of the year.
Hajj was selected eighth overall in the 2004 Major League Lacrosse draft by New Jersey . On the Pride, Hajj is joined by fellow former Hoyas Pat Collins (MSB ’03), Scott Schroeder (MSB ’02), Rodger Colbert (MSB ’01) and current Georgetown assistant coach Scott Urick (COL ’99). Overall, nine Hoyas are members of ajor League Lacrosse.
Hajj was a senior captain for Georgetown in 2004, leading the team with 24 goals on the season. He was named a first team All-American and the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, leading the Hoyas to a perfect 3-0 record in conference play and their fourth straight ECAC title. Hajj finished his Georgetown career with 63 goals, putting him 15th on the Hoyas’ all-time goals list.
Georgetown closed out the 2004 season with a last-second loss to Syracuse in the NCAA quarterfinals in May. It was the third straight quarterfinal loss for the Hoyas, who have never advanced to the lacrosse final four. Syracuse went on to defeat Navy in the national title game.
