Hampton-Torres

Andreas Jeninga/The Hoya Kelley Hampton and running-mate Luis Torres began campaigning in Red Square at 12 a.m. on Tuesday.

With campus experience both inside and outside GUSA, Kelley Hampton (SFS ’05) and Luis Torres (COL ’05) are running on a platform centering on fiscal responsibility.

Hampton is the vice chair of the Student Activities Commission and Torres is currently the longest serving member of the GUSA Assembly.

“GUSA, a group that should theoretically represent the whole student body, has not been as well-run an organization as it could be in terms of involving the student body, using funds properly and educating students about administrative decisions and processes,” Hampton said.

Her platform addresses what she sees as many of the most pressing issues: unifying the student activity funding boards and disseminating information about available transportation beyond GUTS buses, fairer housing eligibility and a revision of the current alcohol and sexual assault policies to “emphasize individual responsibility and safety.”

Advocating an expanded role for Assembly representatives, Hampton said, “The GUSA executive’s role in regards to the assembly should be one that encourages debate, acts as a moderator while providing input, and ultimately has the responsibility of making the final decision on the issues.”

Torres explained the core ideology behind his campaign. “Kelley and I believe that GUSA is at its best when it fosters communication within students, works to build a unified purpose and serves as a resource for student advocacy,” he said.

According to Torres, part of the pair’s platform has already been introduced to the GUSA Assembly. At last week’s meeting, Torres introduced a proposal for a revised GUSA budget that was sent to a special committee composed of Torres, current president Brian Morgenstern (COL ’05) and Director of Student Organizations Martha Swanson, among others.

Hampton and Torres have been endorsed by 10 GUSA Assembly members including Assembly Chair Jack Ternan (COL ’04).
