Healthy Wisey’s Hits Wisconsin

Hoya Staff Writer Friday, August 25, 2006 Lindsay Anderson/The Hoya Wisey’s, the new delicatessen on Wisconsin Avenue, offers a fare similar to that of Wisemiller’s Delicatessen, but with an emphasis on healthy options.

Students living off campus will no longer have to make the trek to 36th Street for a Chicken Madness, now that Wisemiller’s Delicatessen has opened another shop on Wisconsin Avenue. The store, which opened on Sunday, owned and operated by Wisemiller’s founder Nabeel Audeh (GRD ’89). Located across from CVS, the new deli will serve the same classic subs and sandwiches as its precursor, but “with an accent on healthy choices,” Audeh said. Audeh said that the new location would feature a wide variety of low-carb and gourmet breads, along with paninis, wrap sandwiches and a new line of salads. The new location will also serve smoothies, soft-serve frozen yogurt and specialty teas. Audeh is also moving ahead with plans to open coffee shop at the building at 35th and O Streets that housed Sugar’s Cafe until May. Sugar’s closed after 85 years at that location after Audeh declined to renew the lease of its operator, Chol Kim. Saxby’s, the name of new coffee shop, will feature a fireplace, a plasma screen TV and wireless internet access, Audeh said. While Wisey’s will accept GoCards for purchases, Audeh said he hopes that the new deli will be able to appeal not only to Georgetown students living off campus, but to local residents as well. Audeh said that in having a more visible location and appealing to a wide range of customers, he hopes Wisey’s will generate business during times of the year when he said Wisemiller’s student-driven sales fall flat, such as the winter holiday season. “[Wisey’s is] not hidden in the neighborhood,” Audeh said. According to Audeh, the launch of Wisey’s was intended to be gradual, with an increase in advertising coming later this fall, but already the new deli has already made an impression on students. Drew Beck (SFS ’07) said he feels the new building does not resemble Wisemiller’s at all, and that the new location reminds him of a tea house. Beck added that while he enjoys the sandwiches at Wisemiller’s, he doesn’t see himself going to the new Wisey’s unless he’s already in the area. Erin O’Connor (COL ’07) said that although she hadn’t yet heard about Wisey’s, the thought the idea of a more health conscious menu was very appealing. “You don’t always feel like a greasy sandwich,” she said.
