In the final single-handed qualifying race of the year at the U.S. Naval Academy, freshman Evan Aras qualified for the MAISA single-handed championship.

Aras follows in the footsteps of classmate Charlie Buckingham, who won the previous qualifying race on Sept. 9. Aras dominated the regatta, taking the top spot by 40 points against tough local competition.

He and Aras, along with senior Blaire Herron and sophomore Amanda Hassler, will compete next weekend in Annapolis, Md., at the AISA single-handed championships. The top four of 18 men’s finishers and five of 18 women at next weekend’s regatta qualify for the national championship in laser racing to be held the first weekend in November.

At the Senator’s Cup, hosted by St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s City, Md., Georgetown took second place behind the host school. The consensus No. 1 team in the country, St. ary’s, and its A boat of fifth-year seniors, took first in the A division. Georgetown’s B boat of Buckingham and freshman Ashley Phillips took total control of their half of the regatta, finishing no worse than second in each of their races to run away with first place.

The Georgetown coed sailors are currently ranked fourth in the ICSA coaches’ poll, four spots higher than where they started the season, while the women’s team sits in seventh, one place ahead of where it began the season.

Kenny Izzo (MSB ’07) will be seeing considerable playing time this season – for Merry Monk Ballina of the Irish SuperLeague. Monk Head Coach Terry Kennedy was excited about Izzo’s signing and told the Irish newspaper, Western People, “We’ll be strong under the boards alright . Izzo is a big guy of real quality. Nobody goes to Georgetown for four years without being a serious player.”

The Merry Monks, 14-6 last season, were asked to play in the league’s southern conference despite being the league’s second-most northern team. After protest, the league has allowed the team to remain in the northern conference for the upcoming season.
