Tim Llewellyn/The Hoya Hoya swimmers competed at the Big East Championships this weekend.
This past weekend 11 members of the Georgetown Swimming and Diving team competed in the Big East Championships held at the Nassau County Aquatics Center. A number of Hoyas swam well at the championships, setting new school records and placing high overall in the Big East.
On the men’s side, senior Chris Lengle swam the 50 free in 21.01 seconds, achieving a 16th-place finish and a new Georgetown record. Lengle also broke a school record with a 45.86 time in the 100 free, breaking former holder Frank Peloso’s 13 year old record. 400 meter relay swimmers senior Will Miller, junior Bryan Evangelista and senior Matt O’Connor also achieved a new school record for their event, finishing in 11th place with a time of 3:30. In addition to their relay accomplishments, Miller and Evangelista also set new school records in their individual events; iller with a time of 53.72 for the 100 back and Evangelista in the 100 fly.
Although many of the athletes individually qualified earlier in the season, several Hoyas earned their Big East spots competing in the Rutgers University Invite the previous Saturday, February 16. These swimmers were Lengle (200 Free) and junior Lauren Moynihan, who broke her current school record in the 500 meter freestyle event.
These two joined Miller (relay), Evangelista (relay), O’Connor (relay), sophomore Mike Kizer (3 meter diving), senior Caragh Moynihan (100 Fly and 100 Free), freshman Michelle Herd (100, 200 Backstroke), freshman Diane Foglizzo (relay), sophomore Juliana Bonilla (1 meter diving) and sophomore Kathryn Harrison (1 meter diving).
The Hoya women also succeeded in breaking school records, with Caragh Moynihan setting a new personal record, swimming 57.66 in the 100 fly, and Herd producing two new records with a 58.78 100 back and 2:08 200 back.
Georgetown moves onto to the ECAC Championships, which will be held in Pittsburgh later this week. The women swimmers who qualified are senior Amanda Anderson, sophomore Colleen Newman and sophomore Erin Kehoe. Junior Jim McLauglin, sophomores Shodai Enters and Edmund Caulfield and freshmen Steven Ferguson, Brendan Griffin and Brad Perez will represent the men’s squad in the swimming and diving team’s last major competition of the season.
