It was the kind of game that players wait their whole lives to be a part of, and the sort of afternoon that fans will remember years from now. It was Jan. 21, 2006, and the score was Georgetown 87, No. 1 Duke 84.
Behind 23 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Brandon Bowman and 18 points, five rebounds, seven assists and airtight defense from sophomore forward Jeff Green, the Hoyas survived a 41-point outburst by Duke’s J.J. Redick and defeated the previously perfect Blue Devils in front of a packed house at MCI Center.
“Today was just our day,” Head Coach John Thompson III said after the game. “Our guys were tough. I think that we made tough plays at both ends of the floor.”
The Hoyas jumped out to a big lead in the first half thanks to 66.7 percent shooting and though the Blue Devils made a furious comeback towards the end of the second half, Georgetown had just enough to hold on for the unexpected victory.
“The last nine minutes of the game seemed like 20 days,” Bowman said following the win. “I jumped on the ball, kind of as a sigh of relief.”
Bowman was not the only one to celebrate the game. As the clock ticked down to zero, the radio voice of the Hoyas, Rich Chvotkin, famously and frantically yelled “Hoyas win, Hoyas win, Hoyas win,” and thousands of Georgetown students took to the court in celebration.
As fans – many of whom had waited for hours to get into CI Center that morning – rejoiced, many Hoyas, both young and old, were seen shaking hands, exchanging high-fives, and embracing in hugs. Whether player, coach, student or alumnus, anyone at MCI Center on that fateful January afternoon came away with a memory they are unlikely to forget.
