Hoya File Photo Sheehan Stanwick has continued her dominance from last season. She has 18 goals in 2001.
Coming off a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Duke that ruined its previously undefeated record and dropped the team three spots in the national rankings, the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team needed to get back on track. And with a decisive 18-3 victory over Boston College on Wednesday, the Hoyas did exactly that.
The Hoyas’ attack, which couldn’t get a shot off against No. 4 Duke in the closing minutes of Saturday’s loss, totally overpowered Boston
College. All-American senior attack Sheehan Stanwick scored six goals, and All-American junior attack Erin Elbe scored three goals and had five assists as the No. 5 Hoyas dominated the Eagles.
“One of our focuses after the Duke game was our attack. I was pleased with how we changed things after we failed to finish against Duke,” Head Coach Kim Simons said. “We came out hard from the very beginning.”
Stanwick and Elbe took control of the game almost immediately. Stanwick got the Hoyas out to an early lead with two unassisted goals within the first three and a half minutes. After a goal from Boston College made it 2-1, Elbe netted her first goal of the day on a pass from sophomore midfielder Liz Ryan and then assisted freshman midfielder Gloria Lozano to make the score 4-1. The Eagles managed to get in one more goal from senior attack and co-captain Emily Ryan to bring the score to 4-2.
Georgetown then went on a six-goal scoring spree, including three more goals from Stanwick, two from Elbe and one form sophomore attack Kate Ahearn. The Hoyas led 10-2 at halftime.
Coming back from the break, the Hoyas continued their offensive onslaught with goals from sophomore attack Wick Stanwick and senior All-American attack Caitlain McLean. Boston College’s Ryan managed to score one more for the Eagles, their final goal of the game.
The Hoyas’ attack refused to let up, with Sheehan Stanwick, Wick Stanwick, Elbe, sophomore midfielder Tracy Weickel, freshman midfielder Anouk Peters and junior attack Margaux Hauss all scoring one goal each to make the final score 18-3.
The Hoyas’ defense also turned in a strong performance, holding the Eagles to very few shots. Junior goalie Chandler Vicchio came up with five saves for the Hoyas in her second career start for the Hoyas. Vicchio started in the cage in place of usual starting senior goalie Bowen Holden, who was sidelined with a torn ACL.
“I thought the defense played well. At the beginning, we were all a little slow to shut down BC, but we made some changes in the game,” Simons said.
The Hoyas’ midfielders also played a large role in the team’s success. They created turnovers, allowing the attack to possess the ball more, which is something the Hoyas have been emphasizing in practice, according to Simons.
Sheehan Stanwick now leads both the team and the Big East conference in points, with 30 on 18 goals and 12 assists. Elbe is second with 27 points on 17 goals and 10 assists.
“Sheehan is one of those players who, whenever our team has a weak outing, she’ll come back with a strong performance the next game,” Simons said.
The Hoyas next travel to Rutgers tomorrow to take on the Scarlet Knights and improve upon their 2-0 Big East record.
