Hoyas Stomp Scarlet Knights

Hoya File Photo Wick Stanwick (shown from last year above) scored four goals against Rutgers.

The score was Stanwick sisters 8, Rutgers 5. Senior All-American attack Sheehan Stanwick and sibling sophomore attack Wick Stanwick each scored four goals in the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team’s 13-5 romp over Rutgers.

The No. 5 Hoyas went on an 11-0 run that carried over from the first half to the second, to break open a 2-2 tie with the Scarlet Knights, whose three-game winning streak came to a halt.

“[The Stanwick sisters] both had a good day,” Head Coach Kim Simons said. “Sheehan did a good job of adjusting herself after some early missed opportunities. Wick is starting to come into her own and she’s playing at a level at which she’s capable of.”

Following its dominant 18-goal performance at Boston College on arch 28, Georgetown continued to showcase its offensive talent to its Big East opponents. Since suffering its first loss against Duke two weeks ago, Georgetown has been offensively powerful, with 31 goals in the last two games.

“We have an incredibly talented attack and we really felt our offense didn’t do what we wanted against Duke,” Simons said. “I think they felt that too, and they’ve been showing it in the past two games.”

Less than three minutes into the contest, Wick Stanwick notched her first goal off a pass from Sheehan, but Rutgers came right back with a goal from Susan Duccilli. At the 16:26 mark of the first half, Sheehan netted it past Rutgers goalkeeper Lauren Gulotta for the 2-1 edge. But again the Scarlet Knights returned the favor, this time scoring on a goal from Cristina Curiale.

“We started out a little slow and we let Rutgers get into the game,” Simons said. “They are a team that plays on emotion, and we didn’t want to give them confidence.”

Whatever confidence the Scarlet Knights had after their second goal dissipated as the Hoyas went on an 11-goal rampage. The younger Stanwick got things started with her second goal coming at the 9:27 mark, and sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Ryan got one with 4:32 remaining in the half. A little over two minutes later, Wick and Sheehan scored a goal each in a span of 18 seconds to close out the half.

In the second half, Georgetown’s other All-American attacker, senior Erin Elbe scored twice within the first two minutes. After a first-half hat trick, Wick got her fourth of the game at the 17:54 mark off an assist from Elbe. Freshman midfielder elissa Ellers added a goal four minutes later.

Sheehan Stanwick would not let her sister outscore her as she got two more shots past Rutgers for her third and fourth goals of the game. Junior Kate Ahearn closed out the clinic with a goal at the 4:41 mark to give the Hoyas a commanding 13-2 lead.

Senior All-American goaltender Bowen Holden came up with nine saves before being replaced by junior goalie Chandler Vicchio in the closing minutes of the contest. In the last two minutes of the game, the Scarlet Knights finally regained their offensive touch to notch three goals.

Georgetown outshot Rutgers, 33-19 as it maintained its ascendancy over Big East teams. In their four conference wins, the Hoyas have outscored their opponents, 69-21.

Georgetown will not have it easy this coming week when it faces two top 10 teams. On Saturday, the Hoyas travel to Chapel Hill to face No. 7 North Carolina before returning to Kehoe Field to host top-ranked Maryland on April 12.

“UNC is a very athletic and balanced team,” Simons said. “When they’re on, they’re pretty tough.”

In order to come out on top, the Hoyas will need to get the type of offensive production they have recently received.

“Unlike the Duke game, we need to score more than seven goals if we want to win,” Simons said. “We need to dictate the tempo and the intensity of the game.”
