Letter to the Editor Sept. 19, 2008

I am writing in response to the editorial “Counsel for the Career Center” (THE HOYA, Sept. 16, 2008, A2). The editorial argues that the Career Education Center focuses on opportunities in banking at the expense of opportunities in government or politics. Given that many Georgetown students are interested in careers in government and politics, I would like to point out some relevant job and internship opportunities, programs and announcements provided by the Career Center since last spring.

As of Sept. 16, 2008, Hoya Career Connection contains 179 jobs and internships with “government” indicated as the primary job function. Students should expect to find many more opportunities at the local, state and federal levels added to HCC throughout the semester. The Career Center’s Spring Expo features over 90 government and non-profit employers who are interested in connecting with Georgetown students. The 2008 Fall Career Fair is scheduled to showcase 16 government employers, including the CIA and the Departments of State, Justice, Veterans Affairs and Defense. The Career Center provides specialized one-on-one employment advising for students interested in government, non-profit and international development career fields.

Programs marketed by the Career Center include Careers for the Common Good (featuring the Department of Labor and the Office of Management and Budget), various congressional internships, the New Jersey Political Campaign internship, Democratic Think Tank summer internship and the FBI Honors Internship Program. Upcoming events information sessions by the FBI, Homeland Security, CIA and the Peace Corps. Students interested in government and politics have many resources at their disposal and are encouraged to visit the Career Center for more information.
