Memphis Awaits in Marquee Matchup

Georgetown released its men’s basketball schedule Wednesday, announcing 12 nationally televised contests, a December matchup with a likely top-three team in Memphis, and a season finale against Big East co-favorite Louisville.

Georgetown begins its season Nov. 10 at Verizon Center against William and Mary. The Hoyas play the home half of their home-and-home series with Michigan on Nov. 15. The Wolverines fell easily to the Hoyas last season, 67-51, new Head Coach John Beilein, formerly of West Virginia, has experience beating Georgetown. His Mountaineers defeated the Hoyas in three of their last four meetings, including last season at Verizon Center.

Immediately after Michigan, on Nov. 21, Georgetown visits uncie, Ind., to take on another team in transition, Ball State. The Cardinals’ former head coach, John Thompson III’s younger brother Ronny, resigned in the offseason, claiming a “racially hostile work environment.”

An early-season game against a CAA opponent is usually little more than a warm-up, but when Georgetown travels to Norfolk on Nov. 28 to play Old Dominion, memories of last year’s 75-62 upset in McDonough Gymnasium at the hands of the Monarchs will be on everyone’s mind.

On Dec. 5, Georgetown will face Alabama at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center for the first Big East-SEC Invitational. Similar to the ACC-Big Ten challenge, the series will pit competitive teams that would otherwise not face each other so early in the season.

Even though Georgetown follows Alabama with two cupcake games against Jacksonville and Radford, 202nd and 320th in RPI last season, it plays its premier out-of-conference game Dec. 22 at emphis. The Tigers have made the NCAA Elite Eight the previous two years and will be national-title contenders with highly touted freshman point guard Derrick Rose. They are likely to open the season ranked No. 1.

Georgetown starts its conference schedule Jan. 5 at Rutgers. For the first time, Georgetown plays 14 of the 16 Big East teams once and the two others twice. Under the previous scheduling format, each Big East team played 10 teams once and three teams twice.

Hoya fans luck out this season with home and away games against rival Syracuse and talented Louisville. The Cardinals visit Verizon Center March 8 for both teams’ final game of the season. Louisville finished second in the conference last year and the Big East regular season title could hinge on that game. The Hoyas also play St. John’s, a one-time rival fallen on hard times, twice.
