Morgenstern Not Running For Reelection

GUSA President Brian Morgenstern (COL ’05) will not seek reelection in next month’s GUSA executive elections, a senior GUSA official said this week. He had been contemplating a run for reelection, but decided against the bid earlier this week, the senior official added.

Morgenstern has not publicly announced his reelection plans but said yesterday that he had decided against seeking a second term.

Morgenstern said he did not feel he would have the necessary commitment to continue to deliver the level of service that Georgetown students would have expected. He also said he had confidence in the prospective candidates who will seek his job during the Feb. 9 elections.

According to Director of Student Organizations Martha Swanson, orgenstern is the first junior to serve as the student association’s president since she began keeping records during the 1984-85 academic year.

At a Jan. 14 information meeting for potential candidates, orgenstern commented on the requirements of his job and his experiences throughout the past year.

He told the potential candidates, “If you are lucky enough to win this election, you will have a job that will take up a great deal of your life for the next year. It is a full time job.” He said that the GUSA presidency is “a lot of honor, but far more responsibility.”

While he said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the student body, he also mentioned the less glamorous facets. “You will spend your Friday mornings in meetings talking about the New South student lounge that you will never use.”

Reminiscing of the past year, he said, “Sometimes it’s very difficult to get things done. The university is not a democracy, as was stated by ex-[University] President [Robert] Henle, S.J. One of the biggest challenges was finding administration officials who are as enthusiastic about things like GUTS busses as I am.”

The deadline for presidential and vice-presidential candidates to file candidacy statements with the GUSA Elections Commission is tonight at 5 p.m.
