Georgetown recently named the Rev. Timothy S. Godfrey, S.J. the new Director of Campus Ministry. He will start his position this July. As Director of Campus Ministry, Godfrey will continue to carry out Georgetown’s Jesuit educational mission of caring for mind, body and spirit through religious services, retreats, extracurricular programs and pastoral care.
Godfrey will report to the Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., who was named vice president of mission and ministry last June. Boroughs replaced Interim University Chaplain Scott Pilarz, who had been named president of the University of Scranton.
“Georgetown University strives to foster an environment of faith and collaboration that respects the cultural and religious diversity of the university’s faculty, staff and students,” Godfrey said in a university press release.
Godfrey currently serves as pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Oakland, Calif., a multi-ethnic parish sponsored by the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. His pastoral experiences have dealt specifically with community development in economically and racially diverse neighborhoods and parishes.
Godfrey has also mentored Jesuit and lay graduate theological students in pastoral ministry and serves as the Canonical Pastor of St. Martin de Porres Deanery Elementary School.
The current leaders of Campus Ministry are excited for Godfrey’s arrival to the Georgetown community.
“Fr. Godfrey is an energetic and wonderfully pastoral Jesuit with broad ministerial experience and a deep commitment to social justice and Ignatian spirituality,” Boroughs said in a university press release.
Godfrey holds a master of divinity and a master of theology from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, a master’s of social work from Washington University in St. Louis, a bachelor of nursing and a bachelor of arts from St. Louis University.
Godfrey will oversee campus ministry on all three campuses served by Georgetown’s Campus Ministry, which provides spiritual and pastoral services for the main, medical and law campuses through the work of 18 chaplains, 22 chaplains in residence, one music professional, four program coordinators and six staff members.
