New University Club Offers Career Advice

Two students in conjunction with the MBNA Career Education Center have started a new group that offers opportunities for students interested in careers in media and entertainment.

Nancy Lan (MSB ’06) and Ted Oberwager (MSB ’06) founded the Georgetown Entertainment and Media Club at the end of last year as an offshoot of the career center’s Georgetown Entertainment Media Alliance, a program that sponsors various externships, summer internships and career spotlights for those students interested in media careers and networking, according to career center Director Sylvia Robinson.

“We wanted [GEM] to help bring Georgetown undergrads interested in entertainment and media careers together to help students. gain greater access to knowledge about this industry and to form a student network,” Lan said.

Drawing on herself as an example, Lan noted that there are a lot of students who are interested in this field but just don’t know how to get started. “We want GEM to help be that starting point,” she said.

Lan and Oberwager formed GEM after meeting with Robinson and Rich Battista (MSB ’86), executive vice president of Fox Entertainment Group.

“After participating as an extern in GEMA’s Externship program last year, I learned a significant amount about how the industry works from various Georgetown alumni, and now I see that the media is a very possible career path for me,” Lan said. “The experience . made me realize that there were other Georgetown students who have similar career interests who could benefit from a student network.”

GEM will work closely with GEMA in order to better organize events, trips and networking opportunities for students interested in media careers. The group held an inaugural meeting at the end of last semester, and Lan hopes that more students will get involved this year after they learn more about the club.

Upcoming activities for GEM include a GEMA Spotlight on Entertainment in the McShain Lounge on Sept. 29, where students will have the opportunity to meet alumni currently working in the entertainment field.

Lan has activities planned for GEM that include visits to media offices in the District, such as the National Geographic office, and a trip to meet with alumni from the New York GEMA chapter.
