Georgetown University sends the second-highest percentage of students overseas among research institutions, according to a report by NAFSA, the Association of International Educators.
Yeshiva University’s 74.5 percent far exceeds that of the next three institutions in the category – Georgetown University sent 52.1 percent of students abroad in 2002 followed by the University of Notre Dame at 50.6 percent and Duke University at 49.7 percent.
By volume, Georgetown places fifth nationally, sending 1412 students abroad in the 2001-02 school year.
Yet, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the NAFSA panel expressed disappointment with the overall statistics for research institutions as well as with the moderate growth rate in programs abroad.
Specifically, the magazine notes the increasing number of colleges mandating foreign language courses, yet failing to support such classes with a global education. The report encouraged the government to reform federal grant and loan programs to encourage study abroad, while saying that college officials need to be more proactive in reviving such programs.
