Schmitter-Hartzler

Andreas Jeninga/The Hoya The Schmitter-Hartzler campaign flyered Red Square in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Stressing accessibility and willingness to listen to others, Chris Schmitter (SFS ’06) and David Hartzler (COL ’06) promise to be GUSA executives who are accessible to all students and open to new ideas.

“I decided to run because I want to be a student advocate that is always accountable and accessible to the student body,” Schmitter said.

Hartzler described his motivation for running for student office. “[Chris] and I decided to stop complaining about what we do not like at Georgetown and try to make a difference,” he said.

Their platform centers on being open to students’ ideas with weekly “town hall” meetings around campus and creating an AIM screen name that will be available for comments at all hours. They would also like to create an advisory board of leaders of the various student groups around campus to discuss ways to make the campus more cohesive.

Applauding the work of the current GUSA administration with respect to GUTS buses, Housing and Facilities improvements and the development of the New South student space, Schmitter and Hartzler plan to continue these policies with more emphasis on mental health issues and community involvement.

“As advocates of the students, we believe it is our responsibility to publicize what exactly GUSA does, and offer ourselves as an outlet for student participation in our government,” Schmitter said. “Dave and I refuse to accept that ideas and desires of students need to be discarded because those students don’t have an outlet for getting active.”

With respect to the GUSA Assembly, Schmitter said, “The Assembly should be a chorus of voices from various classes and interests and the executive should be the voice that represents the collected wishes of the entire undergraduate body.”
