Sept. 11 Remembered in Dahlgren Service

Students, faculty and other members of the Georgetown community will commemorate the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks this Saturday in the Dahlgren Quadrangle.

The Office of the President, the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Office of Student Affairs will play host to an interfaith memorial service that will include song, prayer and reflections.

“We wanted to tend to the needs of all those members of our university community whose lives were directly affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001,” Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., vice president for mission and ministry, said. “It’s important for us to recognize the needs of our diverse community.”

Susan Buckingham, assistant to Rev. Boroughs, said that several weeks of planning have contributed to the event. The event will include reflection from government professor Anthony Arend (SFS ’80), Hadia Mubarak (GRD ’05) and University President John J. DeGioia.

Elisa Perez (COL ’05), who will read the closing remarks, said, “Sept. 11 affected all of us in distinct ways and although it was three years ago, it is still fresh in our hearts.” Perez was in Madrid on Mar. 11, 2004, when terrorists bombed a subway train there and plans to personally commemorate that event as well on Saturday.

Similar events have commemorated the event each year since 2001.

In September 2002 binders were placed around campus for students to write their reflections on the first anniversary of the attacks. Since then, these binders have been stored in the GUSA office without function but were rediscovered over the summer by the Student Association president, Kelley Hampton (SFS ’05).

Hampton and Dan Porterfield, vice president for public affairs and strategic development, have discussed publicly displaying these written reflections around campus, with Lauinger Library and Healy Hall as possible locations.
