While most Hoyas were readying themselves to come back to the Hilltop, senior Andrew Campbell won gold at the 2005 Summer World University games on August 22. Campbell defeated favored Turkish sailor Kamal Mutlubas in Izmir, Turkey for the prestigious title.
The Georgetown men’s soccer team also started the year well, when stars Ricky Schramm, a junior, and Jeff Curtin, a senior, were awarded the Big East’s preseason offensive and defensive players of the year on August 4.
Then in September, football kicked off its season at Patriot League rival Bucknell, stealing a 19-16 win on the strength of two field goals by sophomore Eric Bjonerud. Despite the promising start, Georgetown’s special teams would be the bane of their play for the rest of the season, making only 54 percent of their field goals.
September 17, however, was a milestone for the football program as the Hoyas opened the new Multi-Sport Facility against Brown on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Despite a strong first half of defense, the Hoyas succumbed after the break, losing a 34-3 decision on the new turf.
Women’s soccer peaked as the month came to a close; the Hoyas defeated St. John’s on Sept. 30 for their third consecutive Big East victory and eighth consecutive victory overall. The streak pushed their league record to 3-0-1 and their overall mark to 10-1-1. The eight consecutive Georgetown wins broke the 2002 school record of seven.
