Weeks after the end of their accomplished 2007 season and first appearance in the NCAA tournament, four members of the Georgetown women’s soccer team have received postseason honors from SoccerBuzz magazine. Seniors defenseman Karen Waskewich and forward Sara Jordan were named Second Team and Third Team all Mid-Atlantic respectively by the publication. Waskewich anchored the Hoya defense which shut out 10 opponents this season, while Jordan, a second team all-Big East selection as well, leaves the Hilltop eighth on the all-time goals list and second in assists. “It was definitely an honor to get post-season recognition,” Jordan said, “but I think for all of us, what we did as a team was more important to us and definitely more important for this program.” Freshman forward Ingrid Wells, Big East Rookie of the Year and a finalist for SoccerBuzz’s National Freshman of the Year award, added third team all-American, first team freshman all-American and first team all-Mid Atlantic to her list of accolades this season. Wells tied the Georgetown single season assist record with 13 this season. Joining her as a freshman all-American was defenseman Michaela Buonomo, who was selected as a fourth team freshman all-American and first team freshman all-Mid Atlantic teams. The individual awards cap a season which saw the Hoyas reach new heights as a program. Under the leadership of Head Coach Dave Nolan and eight seniors, Georgetown won a school high 14 games, including road wins over perennial Big East powerhouses Connecticut and Marquette. “Our goal as a class, when we came in as freshmen, was to leave this program in a better place than where we found it, and I think we definitely did that, making the NCAA’s,” Jordan said reflecting on her career on the Hilltop. “It was huge for the program and for the eight seniors because we really set out to do that, and it was really nice to accomplish some of the goals we set as freshmen.” This year’s group of seniors leaves as one of the most storied classes in the history of the program. But while the loss of such a strong senior class will be hard on the Hoyas, there is great potential for the future of the program with Wells and a strong group of underclassmen returning next season. “The underclassmen are great and Dave [Nolan] is always bringing in strong players and strong kids,” Jordan said. “I think the players involved in this program care about it and want, like we did, to leave it in a better place than where they found it. I think as a program it has a really bright future.” For now, Georgetown can relax after a long and successful season, but it will soon be time to start preparing for a new season, which they hope will bring even more unprecedented success.
