With recent headlines and news stories, some have had more antagonistic feelings toward the federal government. From secrets kept to a government shutdown to conflicts between parties, past events have left many upset. One person in particular has had enough.

On Wednesday, DCist reported that a person has created a White House petition to change the “D.C.” in “Washington, D.C.” from meaning “District of Columbia” to “District of Criminals.” The petition claims that “the name of the country’s capital is misleading and should be changed.” To succeed in this endeavor, the petition must receive over 100,000 signatures by December. Currently, the signature tally has risen from the initial report of one to four.

Clearly, this petition has not gained much traction, but does force you to think about what has been occurring just outside of our Georgetown bubble.
