The Summer Shuffle

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when the air outside feels like hot soup and I consider leaving the house with no clothes on at all just to feel a little bit cooler, sometimes the only thing that can lift my spirits is an impromptu dance party. Although it makes no sense, because I’m always much more sweaty and out of breath when I’m done (I never said I was a good dancer), kicking up my heels and dancing my cares away never fails to make me brave enough to stand up to D.C.’s summer heat. And when I want to dance, what music do I put on? Well, these little ditties, of course!

I can’t get “Leave Argentina” by Polarsets out of my head — it’s starting to be a problem. It’s on an endless loop on my iPod. I sing it in the shower (one of the joys of living alone). This morning it was even stuck in my head when I woke up. On a scale of one to Icelandic ash, “Leave Argentina” on an endless loop in my brain is a crisis I can live with. As a means of catharsis, I’m sharing it with you. Maybe if it gets stuck in your head, it will leave mine — an eye for an eye. With its pop, upbeat-but-not-obnoxious sound, this track is reminiscent of Two Door Cinema Club. Which means, of course, that it’s perfect for dancing.

“I Heart NY” by Samuel is one of those songs you expect to start playing when you’re walking down the street with a little spring in your step. You mean you don’t envision yourself as the star of a music video whenever it’s sunny out and you’re walking for more than 10 minutes? Well, in that case let me tell you that this song is a dreamy ode to the city in summer. With a steady beat that relies on a triangle (oh, that underrated instrument) to propel it forward, this song is perfect for a little jig while you are firing up the barbecue or getting ready to submerge yourself in the pool. Plus, with lyrics about Coney Island and late nights, it might — just maybe — remind you of the reasons we’re all supposed to like summer in the first place.

Last, but not at all least, is “C’mon Talk” by Jarle Bernhoft. I saw Jarle perform this song live at the Bushstock Festival in London earlier this spring and have been mesmerized by the track ever since. Picture this: a soul singer from Norway with a voice oddly reminiscent of Justin Timberlake. I know it’s pretty difficult to imagine something so strangely wonderful, so I suppose you’ll just have to give this song a listen. The most awesome thing about this song, aside from the fact that it will make you tap your feet as soon as you press play, is that there are no synthesizers or instruments used. All that you hear is Jarle’s voice looped back over itself — he’s a veritable one-man band! If the song weren’t so darn catchy, I’d be annoyed by how talented he is. But luckily enough for me, it is darn catchy.

So there they are, my friends, the songs to make you forget that it’s hot enough outside to melt the Wicked Witch of the West. I swear that if you play these tracks, you will be dancing your heart out in no time, entirely oblivious to the temperature. I would also like to point out that I didn’t waste your time with a selection from 98 Degrees. Even though I really, really wanted to make that pun. You’re welcome.
