The Georgetown baseball team continued its hot streak last weekend, winning all three games in a series against George Mason University.  The Hoyas followed up the weekend sweep with an 11- 9 win over University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Tuesday.

The Hoyas (14-20, 2-1 Big East) opened up the series against the Patriots (15-20, 6-3 Atlantic-10) with a 7-3 win  Friday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.

Junior right-hander Jack Cushing started on the mound for Georgetown and went seven strong innings, allowing just three runs.  Cushing’s performance earned him his second win of the season.  Sophomore right-hander Nick Morreale came in on relief and fired two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Georgetown scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Freshman outfielder James Gabor and senior infielder Jake Bernstein hit back-to-back home runs to get the rally started, with Gabor’s home run being the first of his career. Bernstein was the Hoyas’ main offensive catalyst, recording three hits, a home run and three runs batted in on the day.

Games two and three were part of a doubleheader played Saturday. The Hoyas took the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 6-2 thanks to a stellar pitching outing from sophomore lefty Brent Killam. Killam went six innings and allowed only two runs while striking out eight.

While the game began as a pitcher’s duel, the Blue and Gray was able to get the offense going in the sixth with an single from sophomore infielder Ryan M. Davis. Later in the inning, junior infielder Ryan Weisenberg knocked in a pair of runs with a base hit, and the Hoyas were able to hang onto the lead.

The Hoyas won the series finale against the Patriots in a 10-7 offensive battle. Senior first baseman Alex Bernauer led the offensive with three hits, including a grand slam. Bernauer’s five RBI tied his career high.

The game was tied going into the ninth inning, but Georgetown was able to put up four runs behind hits from Bernstein, Bernauer and .  Senior right-handed pitcher Jimmy Swad came on to close the game and recorded the final three outs for the Hoyas.

On Tuesday, Georgetown won another offensive showdown against UMBC (11-19, 4-5 America East) by a score of 11-9.  The contest was played in Baltimore, Md., at the Retrievers’ home field.  The win was the Hoyas’ seventh straight victory.

Ryan M. Davis had a perfect day at the plate, going 6-6 with four runs scored, four RBI and two stolen bases.  Freshman shortstop Eddie McCabe and senior outfielder Michael DeRenzi each contributed two hits to help power the Hoyas to victory.

The Hoyas trailed 8-4 after five innings, but they took the lead in the eighth following a throwing error by UMBC’s catcher that led to two runs.

Swad came on to pitch in the bottom of the ninth and shut the door once again with his sixth save of the season.

Georgetown will resume play this weekend with a three-game Big East series against St. John’s (23-10, 6-0 Big East) in Queens, N.Y.  Both teams are riding impressive winning streaks, with the Hoyas having won their last seven games and the Red Storm having won their previous nine.
