The Georgetown cross country teams had a successful weekend at the Big East championships in Carmel, Ind., as the men’s team earned its fourth consecutive Big East title and the women’s team placed second.

Men’s Head Coach Brandon Bonsey was pleased with the squad’s efforts.

“I thought as a team we ran well. Overall, I’m excited with where the team is,” Bonsey said.

The Hoyas had four runners finish in the top 10 of the 8-kilometer race. Senior Nick Wareham came in first for the Hoyas with a time of 24:08.7 and earned second place overall. Following Wareham was junior Jack Van Scoter, who finished fourth overall with a time of 24:22.6.

Junior Matthew Bouthillette earned seventh place with a time of 24:47.6 and was followed by graduate student Christian Liddell less than five seconds later.

Bonsey said that Wareham had his best performance of the season at the meet.

“I felt great about it [Nick’s performance]. He ran a really patient race. I think he can be an All-American this fall at the national meet and I think he showed that on Saturday,” Bonsey said.

The women’s squad also ran a strong race as a team, finishing in second place in the 6K race and edging out Providence in the last 1,000 meters.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Julie Culley praised the Hoyas’ competitiveness and finish to the meet.

“This team is hungry to compete, and it shows. We tasked them with beating Providence, and they dug hard that last 1,000 meters to make it happen,” Culley said. “We were so proud to see them outrun the field over the final few turns in the race and out-kick a few women to gain those extra points,” Culley said.

Junior Paige Hofstad led the Hoyas, finishing with a time of 20:33 and earning third place overall.

Culley said that Hofstad has shown improvement and composure so far this season.

“Paige’s third-place finish was an incredible demonstration of her ability to learn and improve this season,” Culley said. “She stayed calm while others fell off pace and she was able to capitalize late in the race and beat some great athletes to finish third.”

Following Hofstad was junior Margie Cullen, who finished with a time of 21:16.4 in 10th place overall. Freshman Katherine Modrall placed 17th, while freshmen Sami Corman and Katie Dammer both earned top-30 finishes.

Culley was impressed with the freshmen’s performances, especially Corman’s, who competed in her first collegiate race.

“[The] Big East [Championship] was Sami’s first race of her collegiate career and she did an exceptional job of running for our team,” Culley said. She is a huge team player and we are excited to have her ability and energy in the mix.”

The men’s and women’s teams will next race on Friday, Nov. 9, in State College, Pa., where they will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships.
