FOOTBALL | Hoyas Fail to Win 4th Straight

AMANDA VAN ORDEN/THE HOYA | Sophomore running back Jay Tolliver and the Hoyas’ backfield have averaged 78.0 rushing yards per game this season.

The Georgetown football team fell to Colgate University by a score of 38-0 on Oct. 27, ending its three-game winning streak in Patriot League play.

Colgate (7-0, 4-0 Patriot League) entered its matchup with Georgetown (4-5, 3-1 Patriot League) as the clear favorite. Colgate has dominated opponents on both sides of the ball so far this season, recording shutouts in four of its last five games and outscoring opposing teams 174-6 in its last six games.

Georgetown Head Coach Rob Sgarlata acknowledged the challenge the Raiders posed to his team.

“[They are] a good football team. Top to bottom. Offense, defense and special teams. Coach Hunt does a great job coaching up here … They’re at the top of the conference right now, ranked pretty high in the country, and that’s what we’re chasing right now,” Sgarlata said in an interview with The Hoya.

Coming into Saturday’s contest, Georgetown had won its last three Patriot League games, including a thrilling 22-16 double-overtime victory over Lehigh on Oct. 20.

After a scoreless first quarter, Colgate broke the game open with a 24-point second quarter. The Raiders scored two short-yardage rushing touchdowns and added a 22-yard field goal before returning an interception for 55 yards and a touchdown.

In the second half, the Raiders again found success in the red zone, scoring a 1-yard touchdown and a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to close out the contest.

Colgate sophomore quarterback Grant Breneman led the air and ground attack for his team, throwing for 69 yards on 12 attempts and rushing for 65 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Colgate senior tailback James Holland Jr. contributed to the Raider’s offensive assault, rushing for 92 yards on 19 carries.

The Georgetown offense struggled throughout the course of the game. The Hoyas failed to cross midfield during any drive, recording six three-and-outs and turning the ball over on downs twice during the contest.

Junior quarterback Gunther Johnson completed eight passes for 48 yards, while sophomore running back Jay Tolliver picked up 16 yards rushing and 24 yards receiving.

Georgetown’s defense remained on the field for most of the game and dealt with constant pressure but held Colgate off the scoreboard in both the first and third quarters.

Senior defensive back Blaise Brown finished the game with a career-high 15 tackles and the 200th tackle of his career, while sophomore linebacker Xavier Reddick added 11 tackles along with a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss of yardage.

Sgarlata praised his defense for battling with the tough Colgate offense.

“I think overall the defense played hard throughout the day. They dealt with some tough field position, just off of the way the game played out,” Sgarlata said.

After a bye week, the Hoyas will host Bucknell on Nov. 10 at 12:30 p.m. on Cooper Field.
