For the second weekend in a row, Georgetown’s volleyball team (5-0) won an early-season tournament.

Last weekend it was the D.C. Challenge, where the Hoyas knocked off George Mason and American. While Georgetown had a tougher task when it travelled to Williamsburg Friday for the Tribe Invitational, the tournament unfolded much the same.

Although Georgetown came out flat-footed in Friday evening’s match with Campbell, the Hoyas fought back and used a dominant third set to overtake the Camels.

“We started off a little slow, but I’m very proud of the way we persevered,” Head Coach Arlisa Williams said in a statement.

While Georgetown dropped the first set, 28-26, a sterling effort from sophomore middle blocker Dani White and sophomore outside hitter Alex Johnson led the Hoyas to a 25-23 win in the second set.

A powerful third set, where the Blue and Gray took an early 11-1 lead and stretched it to seal a 25-8 win, was followed by a dramatic comeback in the fourth set, where Georgetown clawed back from a late deficit to grab a 27-25 win.

“I think the biggest thing is our defensive effort,” Williams said. “They are a crafty team.”

And when the tourney resumed Saturday, Williams would have even more reasons to be pleased.

In the early afternoon session, Georgetown easily dispatched overmatched Manhattan, winning in straight sets, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23.

But the score line is a bit deceiving, because with the Jaspers leading 22-16 in the third set, Williams called a critical timeout that was followed by a 9-1 run.

“We played low error volleyball, exactly what we needed to do to take care of a scrappy Manhattan team,” Williams said.

The Hoyas had only a few hours to rest, however, before facing William & Mary in the second game of the doubleheader.

Georgetown began sharply and broke open a back-and-forth first set with a 25-19 win. After dropping the second set, 25-20, the Hoyas badly trailed the Tribe in the early portion of the third set.

But with the same fight they had shown in the third set against Manhattan, the Blue and Gray overcame the 9-1 deficit with an 11-3 run and ultimately won the set, 25-22.

A 25-20 win in the fourth set sealed the tournament win for the Hoyas, who are 5-0 for the first time in Williams’ tenure.

“Everyone was fatigued at the end, but we really showed mental toughness that we haven’t shown consistently in years past,” Williams said. “I’m very proud of what this group is accomplishing.”

Georgetown was also well represented on the all-tournament team, with White, the tournament MVP, joining Johnson and sophomore libero MacKenzie Simpson on the squad.

After a week of practice, the Hoyas will be back in action this weekend for a tournament hosted by VCU in Richmond, Va. Georgetown takes on Appalachian State Friday and Virginia and VCU in another Saturday doubleheader.
