Hoyas Draw Three Seed, Headed to Providence

A day after its run through the Big East tournament ended in a last-second title game loss, Georgetown was awarded a three seed in the Midwest Regional for the NCAA tournament. Sitting with a crowd of fans in O’Donovan Hall, the Hoyas learned that they will play Ohio on Thursday in Providence, R.I. Georgetown (23-10) beat four top-10 teams this year but finished the regular season 2-4 and fell to the eight seed in the conference tournament. It stormed through the weekend at Madison Square Garden, beating South Florida, top-seeded Syracuse, and Marquette before bowing out to West Virginia. The Mountaineers won the championship behind MVP Da’Sean Butler’s game-winning layup with four seconds to play. Georgetown’s Chris Wright and Greg Monroe were named to the all-tournament team. \”Every team that’s in the tournament has a sore, they have injuries, they’re tired. you work all year – you work all fall, all summer – all the sprints, all the lifting you do is to get to this,\” Head Coach John Thompson III said. \”This is why you play college basketball.\” It is the third time the Hoyas have received a top-three seed in the past four years. As a two-seed, they went to the Final Four in 2007 and then were upset by Davidson in the second round in 2008. Georgetown missed the tournament last year. The Big East earned eight bids, including a No. 1 seed for league regular season champion Syracuse, two No. 2 seeds (Villanova and West Virginia), and another No. 3 (Pittsburgh). Georgetown was 9-8 in games against tournament teams, including wins over No. 1 seeds Syracuse and Duke. Ohio is the Mid-American Conference champion, winning four games in four days to take the tournament title. The Bobcats compiled a 21-14 record and were the ninth-seed in the MAC tournament. Ohio’s leading scorer is Indiana transfer Armon Bassett (16.9 ppg), and five players score in double figures. *Check back later in the week for The Hoya’s NCAA Preview with comprehensive coverage on the Hoyas’ path and a breakdown of the full bracket.*
