Hoyas to Face Heavyweight Teams in Non-Conference Lineup

The men’s basketball team will face at least two big-time programs during non-conference play, playing both the Kansas Jayhawks and Memphis Tigers.

Head Coach John Thompson III announced Thursday that the Hoyas will host the University of Memphis on Dec. 22 at the Verizon Center. The Hoyas defeated the Tigers in 2010 and 2008 after falling to Memphis in 2007, when they were led by Derrick Rose, the reigning Most Valuable Player of the NBA.

Additionally, the bracket for the EA Sports Maui Invitational was unveiled today. The complicated bracket features 12 teams that will play one game on the mainland United States before eight teams head to Maui for college basketball’s premier non-conference tournament.

Memphis will be joining the Hoyas in Hawaii from Nov. 19 to 23, along with traditional national powers Duke, Kansas, UCLA, Tennessee and Michigan. Host school Chaminade University rounds out the field of eight.

The Hoyas will play the Jayhawks in their opening game. Win or lose, the Hoyas will then play the winner or loser, respectively, of the UCLA-Chaminade matchup.

On Nov. 14, the Hoyas will also host the University of North Carolina, Greensboro at the Verizon Center for the mainland Maui Invitational Game.
