The Georgetown men’s lightweight rowing team kicked off its spring season Saturday on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., to take on the Princeton Tigers and the University of Delaware Blue Hens. The Hoyas finished the day with two victories against Delaware and one against Princeton.

The varsity boat, stroked by seniors Joe Cecil, Hector Formoso-Murias, Artym Hayda and Kiefer Mueller, juniors Olivier Malle and John Dolan, sophomore Charlie Koontz and freshman Ryan Walter, with junior Ryan Zuccala as coxswain, came away with the victory in a time of 6:08.9 against Delaware to start the day. The second boat finished next with a time of 6:24.8, while the third Georgetown boat finished in third place at 6:59.9, capping off the duel against the Blue Hens.

Later in the day, the first and third varsity crews were edged out by impressive Princeton squads, but it was the second boat that put in an outstanding effort to record the lightweight team’s first victory over the Tigers in program history.

Practice has revealed the much-improved lightweight group’s talent and strength to compete with every team in their spring schedule, according to Lightweight Varsity Coach Lee Rumpf.

“The training that we’ve done before the race had our boats looking better than they’ve looked in my time here,” Rumpf said in an interview with GUHoyas after a spring break training trip.

The team looks to draw on their veteran roster to help instill a competitive mindset going forward.

“This year our leadership is very strong both physically and culturally,” Rumpf said. “We’re looking for them to keep the team level-headed and remind everyone of our preparation.”

The lineups are not expected to change much over the next few weeks, aside from several standout performers who could challenge for a spot in the varsity boat.

The heavyweights will travel to Princeton this Saturday, March 30, for their spring opener at the Princeton Annual Scrimmage, followed by the lightweight battle against Yale the next weekend.
