Rachael Ryan (COL ’92)

On the first day of Fr. James Schall’s, S.J., “Elements in Political Theory” I was so nervous that I sat in the back of the room. However, quickly I was became totally engaged in his class and moved to the front row. Fr. Schall always carried around a clip board with everyone’s name on it and would call on you randomly, only by last name. But because I sat right up front, he knew my name without having to look on his clipboard, and that always meant so much to me. I did my homework diligently because I always wanted to be fully prepared for whatever question he asked. I will never forget the day he towered over me and said, “Miss Ryan in what year did Socrates die?” Because of Fr. Schall I came to love political theory and I will never forget that Socrates died in 399 B.C.
